Thai Massage FAQ

Our Thai Massage FAQ page contains questions our clients commonly ask us before their first visit. Please call or email us if you have additional questions.

Should I do anything special to prepare for my first Thai Massage session?

There is nothing different that you must do the day of your Thai Massage session. However, following these tips may help your experience to be more enjoyable.

1. Drink plenty of water. Tight muscles become dehydrated. Giving your body more fluid will help your muscles to soften faster during your session.

2. Eat regular meals. An empty stomach may prove to be distracting during your Thai Massage session.

3. If your Thai Massage session is to be combined with Swedish Massage, omit shaving when bathing the day of your session. Razor burn and nicks are not serious, but they may pose as a minor distraction. Don't worry. Your therapist is concerned with your health issues, not body hair.

What should I expect during my first Thai Massage session?

Since our practice focuses on massage and other healing therapies, you can expect to enter a quiet, relaxing environment, free of the odors and noises associated with a salon. After you have completed a Confidential Health History Form, your therapist will take you to a private room to discuss your current conditions and preferences so that your session will be more individualized. Expressing your concerns at this time (areas to avoid, draping, room temperature) will enable you to be more relaxed during the Thai Massage session.

What should I wear during a Thai Massage session?

Clients are fully clothed during a Thai Massage session. Loose fitting clothing, allowing for ease of movement, is best. You will be asked to remove your belt and shoes so that you may rest more comfortably.

If the session is to be combined with Swedish Massage, you will be asked to remove more clothing after the Thai portion of the session is completed. Our policies for Swedish apply: Bear in mind that at Hands On Healing Arts all clients are required to wear underwear or shorts. You are welcome to wear additional clothing if doing so will make you feel more comfortable. You will also be draped with a sheet and/or blanket.

What happens during a Thai Massage session?

Thai Massage is received while the client is lying on a special futon or mat placed on the floor. The therapist will apply deep yet gentle pressure using her palms, thumbs, elbows, and feet. She will also move your limbs and body into Yoga-like stretches. The therapist will work slowly, reaching the limit of the stretch, and moving just a bit farther as your muscles relax.

What does Thai Massage feel like?

Thai Massage feels deeper than Swedish Massage but not as deep as Deep Tissue Massage. Since the therapist applies pressure slowly, your tissues have a chance to unwind and relax without pain. In some ares of the body, it is possible to stretch farther than with Yoga because the stretches are passive. The therapist facilitates all the movement while the client relaxes and enjoys the session.

What happens after a Thai Massage session?

You may resume your normal level of activity after a Thai Massage session, but listen to your body and take time to sit or lie down during the rest of the day if necessary. It is important to drink plenty of water to help flush from your body any toxins that may have been released during the session.

What changes will I notice after a Thai Massage session?

After a session most clients feel both energized and relaxed and more flexible. Thai Massage may be considered a passive form of exercise.

How often should I receive Thai Massage?

The frequency of visits is determined on a case-by-case basis. As with most massage and bodywork techniques, it is best to receive Thai Massage every 4-6 weeks if you want the effects to be cumulative.
