Depression

Most people have experienced some form of situational depression. For some, chronic illness plays a major role. Others suffer from long-term, severe depression or mood disorders. In seasonal affective disorder (SAD) lack of sunshine or vitamin D may be the culprit. Regardless of the cause, it is very important to seek help from a mental health provider.

In some cases clients have benefited by adding Massage Therapy to their current treatment plan. Often, setting aside 30-60 minutes to feel nurtured on a regular basis can make a world of difference.

Each of the techniques listed below have been used to assist people with a variety of symptoms. It is up to you to try different styles of massage and then decide which works best for your symptoms. Also, you should talk to your massage therapist about your session and what you want out of it. Both of you can work together to tailor the session to meet your individual needs.

CranioSacral Therapy focuses on the central nervous system and, therefore, is very relaxing from the inside out. This gentle technique is especially helpful when the source of depression is physical, namely chronic tension in the sacrum and the bones that make up the base of the skull. CST can help to relieve pressure that may be affecting certain nerves.

Swedish Massage and Deep Tissue Massage are more relaxing from the outside in. Both styles are great for relieving muscle fatigue and releasing stress.

Neuromuscular ReEducation utilizes gentle, passive movement and is especially useful when you are feeling "stuck" in your patterns of movement or if you have poor posture. NMR helps to reeducate the body by reminding it of its full range of motion.

Reflexology focuses primarily on the feet but is also surprisingly relaxing for the entire body.

Thai Massage tends to be more balancing. You will feel both relaxed (stress released) and energized after experiencing this technique.
