Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a complicated syndrome of the Central Nervous System that manifests as a collection of conditions (arthritis, Reynaud's disease, scleroderma, etc.). The pain-processing commincation between the brain and spinal cord is "short-circuited". It is diagnosed by on-going pain in specific trigger points in the body. Since the pain begins in the muscles, special care must be given to Fibromyalgia clients seeking relief through Massage Therapy and Bodywork. The therapist should use a light touch and avoid direct or deep pressure. Hot Stones and other tools should be avoided. Since Fibromyalgia clients suffer from pain every day, their pain threshold may be askew.
The techniques listed help by reducing pain, stress, and anxiety, by relaxing muscles, and by increasing endorphins (the body's natural pain killers). Some clients benefit from scheduling sessions with alternating techniques in order to focus on current symptoms. For example, CranioSacral Therapy may keep depression at bay one month while Swedish Massage may relieve muscle soreness the following month.
CranioSacral Therapy, the gentlest "hands on" technique we offer, helps to release the tissues in a very slow and steady manner. By focusing on the inherent, subtle rhythm of the Central Nervous System, this technique is deeply relaxing. The client may remain fully clothed. CST may also be combined with a light Swedish Massage.
Neuromuscular ReEducation is a technique that provides a slow release of the layers of fascia, or connective tissue. It works deep into the body by integrating passive movement, rather than pressure. NMR may also be received while fully clothed or may be integrated with a light Swedish Massage session.
Swedish Massage, when provided with a light touch, reminds the muscle fibers to lengthen and relax. Muscle contraction (shortening) is caused by repeated episodes of stress and pain. Stress and pain, in turn, cause more muscle contraction. Swedish Massage helps to defeat this cycle.
