Physical Abuse
Many victims of physical abuse rely on Massage Therapy to aid in the healing process.
Learning to feel comfortable in one's own body after experiencing physical abuse is a long road. Massage Therapy, with a caring and patient therapist, can aid in that process in many ways. Making that mind/body connection enables true healing to occur. Memories stored within the body's tissues may be released. Chronic "guarding" patterns may also be released as the body learns a new way of moving and being. Before scheduling a session, it is okay to call and ask to speak directly to the therapist. Most likely, she has worked with other victims of physical abuse and can allay some of your fears. She should reassure you that you will not be judged and that you may stop the session at any time for any reason. During the session, it is very important that you focus on slow, deep breathing and communicate with the therapist about any discomfort or anxiety you may be feeling. Rather than diving right in, you might try progressive levels of bodywork. Many techniques that are received while fully clothed are just as beneficial as an oil massage. You can begin with light pressure or no pressure at all and then explore different massage/bodywork styles as you feel more comfortable. Deep Tissue Massage is recommended only after establishing a comfortable working relationship with your therapist. You must trust that your therapist will lighten the pressure at your request. The therapist must trust that you will speak up if you are uncomfortable in any way.
